Two languages, two series
Just as in France, where a similar advertising campaign was launched at the same time, Belgian newspapers began running ads on February 2, 1939, promoting a joint campaign for Cadum soaps and the film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which was a major box office success in Belgium that year.
The idea was once again to collect chromolithographs, but unlike in France—where you had to purchase a box of three soaps—in Belgium it was enough to buy just one bar of soap priced at 2.25 Belgian francs to receive the coveted gift. Also, the images were not numbered. Customers were also encouraged to mail in seven pink soap wrappers to Cadum, Service 29, Centersteen 47 in Brussels, in exchange for a larger print featuring Snow White and Prince Charming.
The images were the same as in France, with one exception: when a dwarf’s name differed in Flemish and French, both names were printed on the front (in blue rather than black, as used in the French version). The text on the back, although modeled on the French version, was fully translated and differed in both tone and detail.

The second series
Advertisements for this series continued in newspapers until July 27, and starting August 13, a second series of cards was promoted. Since France had already entered World War II before Belgium, this second set appears to have been distributed exclusively in Belgium. In fact, the illustration style seems to match that of the anonymous artist behind the promotional campaign for De Beukelaer biscuits.
This time, the cards no longer introduced individual characters, as in the first series. Instead, they depicted scenes from the film, redrawn from official studio artwork that had already been widely reproduced in books and merchandise. While collectors could arrange the scenes in the order of the film’s storyline, the text on the back of each card primarily emphasized the connection between the story and Cadum soap. Only the reverse side of the main large card recounted the full story of the film.
It was still possible to send in seven wrappers to the same address, but now Cadum returned both large cards from the two different series instead of just one. But just like in France, the price of the soap increased over the course of the promotion—from 2.25 to 2.75 Belgian francs. A final wave of newspaper advertisements appeared on November 8 and 9, 1939—after which the shadow of war fell over Belgium on May 10, 1940.

The cards of the first series
Snow White and Prince charming
Snow White was a kind young girl whom the Queen—her wicked stepmother—forced to work in the palace kitchens. One day, as Snow White was drawing water from a well, Prince Charming caught sight of her reflection and fell hopelessly in love with her. But Snow White, startled, ran off to her room, and the prince sang of his love beneath her balcony.
When the wicked Queen consulted her magic mirror, she learned of Snow White’s romance. Worse still, she discovered that Snow White had now been declared the fairest in the land—a title the Queen had held until then. Driven mad with jealousy, the Queen resolved to have Snow White killed.
Escaping her enemy, Snow White took refuge in the home of the Seven Dwarfs. She taught them the joy of a tidy home, the comfort of a bath, and even baked them a redcurrant pie. “But you won’t get any until you’ve washed!” Snow White warned.
At first surprised to find water so wet, the dwarfs quickly came to enjoy washing with Cadum Soap. Only Grumpy resisted, so they dunked him in the tub by force. As for Dopey, he somehow managed to swallow the soap—and although Cadum was delicious, he admitted he still preferred Snow White’s redcurrant pie!
The image shows a scene between Snow White and Prince Charming after they have escaped from the evil Queen.
Sneezy
Afflicted with a
Most incurable sneeze,
SNEEZY must let it out—
At the slightest breeze!
Poor SNEEZY! He suffers from a strange condition: he always sneezes at the worst possible moment!
When the Dwarfs first noticed a strange presence in their bedroom, SNEEZY let out such a thunderous sneeze that he nearly flattened them all against the wall.
Another time, Bashful carelessly held the bouquet Snow White had picked right under his nose. The result? A wild fit of sneezes so intense that the Dwarfs had to tie a napkin around SNEEZY’s nose just to make it stop.
At the party in honor of Snow White, Dopey climbed onto SNEEZY’s shoulders so that together, they’d be tall enough to dance with their lovely guest. But true to form, SNEEZY let out such a mighty sneeze that Dopey went flying and had to cling to the ceiling beams!
Only once did SNEEZY, overcome with joy and awe, forget to sneeze: it was when Prince Charming kissed Snow White and woke her from her deep sleep.
Collect the portraits of all the Dwarfs, SNEEZY’s six brothers—there are seven in all! And don’t forget to keep the pink wrappers from your Cadum soap bars. Once you have seven, send them to CADUM, Cantersteen 47, Brussels, and you’ll receive, absolutely free, a magnificent print of Snow White and Prince Charming.
Cadum. Hard soap, long-lasting soap.

Happy
In the little group,
Who is so jolly?
He is full of soup.
His name is HAPPY.
HAPPY is one of those lucky souls who’s always cheerful, always smiling, and always sees the bright side of life.
When the Dwarfs returned from the mine and found their house all cleaned up, there were murmurs of suspicion: “Someone stole our dishes!”
— “No,” said HAPPY, “they were just hidden in the cupboard!”
Nothing can take away HAPPY’s good mood.
When SNEEZY lets out a sneeze so powerful it sends him flying into the wall, he just keeps smiling and calmly removes the pot that landed on his head.
He willingly agrees to wash up with CADUM soap at Snow White’s request—even though, as he points out, “It’s not even Sunday!” And off he goes cheerfully to the tub, drying himself—still smiling—with Grumpy’s beard.
Of course, it’s HAPPY who leads the musical celebration held in Snow White’s honor.
He only loses his smile when they find Snow White lying on the ground, having bitten the poisoned apple given to her by the wicked Queen.
And he won’t regain his cheer until Prince Charming awakens her from her deep sleep with a kiss.
Collect the portraits of all the Dwarfs, HAPPY’s six brothers—there are seven in total! And don’t forget to keep the pink wrappers from your CADUM soap bars. Once you’ve collected seven, send them to CADUM, Cantersteen 47, Brussels, and you’ll receive, absolutely free, a magnificent picture of Snow White and Prince Charming.
Bashful
BASHFUL is afraid of girls!
Snow White stole his heart.
If she smiles, he melts—
Nearly dying of fright!
It was love at first sight! The moment BASHFUL laid eyes on Snow White, asleep across the Dwarfs’ beds, he fell hopelessly in love.
“She’s so beautiful,” he whispered in awe. “She looks like an angel!”
From his bashful expression, Snow White immediately recognized him.
“It’s you, BASHFUL!” she exclaimed. And right away, poor BASHFUL turned red all the way to his ears and, in his embarrassment, twisted his beard into such a tangle it soon looked like a big ball of red fuzz.
Later, still madly in love, BASHFUL shyly asked Snow White to sing a love song.
This happened right after one of SNEEZY’s explosive sneezes had thrown DOPEY up to the ceiling, sending the Dwarfs into a panic!
When Snow White pointed out his dirty hands before dinner, BASHFUL was so ashamed he thought he might die on the spot—and was the first of the Dwarfs to run off and wash.
The kiss Snow White placed on his forehead the next morning nearly made him faint with emotion.
But just then, the forest animals came rushing in to warn the Dwarfs: the Evil Queen was on her way, chasing after Snow White.
Collect the portraits of all the Dwarfs—BASHFUL’s six brothers. There are seven in all! And don’t forget to save the pink wrappers from your CADUM soap bars. Once you have seven, send them to CADUM, Cantersteen 47, Brussels, and you’ll receive, absolutely free, a magnificent picture of Snow White and Prince Charming.

Doc
Proud and full of flair,
DOC will always talk.
But caught up in his own big words,
He often starts to balk!
DOC is like many people you may know: solemn, puffed up with self-importance, and completely in love with the sound of his own voice. But when it comes time to act—he vanishes!
Poor fellow! He spends most of his time trying to explain what he just said.
Still, his most important job is checking the precious gems the Dwarfs dig up in the mine. And there, mischievous DOPEY—his helper—loves to play tricks on him!
You could say DOC is the leader of the Dwarfs… except when something actually needs to get done. Then GRUMPY takes over while DOC is still making speeches! A heated argument breaks out between them when it comes time to decide whether Snow White can stay in the Dwarfs’ cottage.
“Yes!” declares DOC.
“Not a chance!” snaps GRUMPY.
But he quickly changes his mind when he learns she can bake redcurrant pie!
When Snow White tells the Dwarfs they all need to wash with CADUM soap, DOC gets his revenge on GRUMPY, who refuses. He teams up with Happy, Bashful, and Sneezy, and together they dunk the grumbler right into the tub!
Collect the portraits of all the Dwarfs—DOC’s six brothers. There are seven in all! And don’t forget to save the pink wrappers from your CADUM soap bars. Once you’ve collected seven, send them to CADUM, Cantersteen 47, Brussels, and you’ll receive, absolutely free, a magnificent picture of Snow White and Prince Charming.
Sleepy
SLEEPY is a little guy
Who yawns and drifts along.
Quick to doze off anytime,
He’s napping all day long!
SLEEPY never seems fully awake. Gazing at the world through his half-closed eyes, you’d think he only ever steps out of a never-ending dream for a moment.
In the five centuries he’s been alive, he still hasn’t managed to get a full night’s rest!
Flies have always tormented SLEEPY. One big bumblebee took it upon itself to harass him while he was pushing his little mine cart deep underground.
Annoyed, SLEEPY tried to swat the bee with his whip—but missed—and accidentally struck the deer pulling HAPPY’s wagon!
Then another pesky fly landed on SLEEPY’s nose while he slept. The result? A sleepless night that left him more tired than ever.
But peace was finally made the day SLEEPY allowed a fly to take a bath in the lather of the CADUM soap bar she had landed on.
The next morning, after a peaceful, restful night, SLEEPY felt so refreshed that he was the first to notice the alarm raised by the forest animals—you know, when they came to warn the Dwarfs that the Evil Queen had found Snow White…
Collect the portraits of all the Dwarfs—SLEEPY’s six brothers. There are seven in total! And don’t forget to save the pink wrappers from your CADUM soap bars. Once you have seven, send them to CADUM, Cantersteen 47, Brussels, and you’ll receive, absolutely free, a magnificent picture of Snow White and Prince Charming.

Grumpy
GRUMPY is a little guy
Always bursting with rage.
But often he grumbles and growls
To hide a heart that’s sage!
GRUMPY complains about everything—especially women.
“A bunch of vipers!” he proclaims.
When Snow White came seeking refuge from the Evil Queen, he wanted to send her away.
“The Queen’s a witch!” he declared. “She’ll come after us too!”
But his mood softened when he learned Snow White could bake delicious redcurrant pies.
Still, his anger returned when Snow White ordered the Dwarfs to wash up before dinner.
“I knew she was up to something,” he grumbled. “But I won’t wash, no way!”
So the other Dwarfs grabbed him and dunked him into the tub, scrubbing him down thoroughly.
GRUMPY roared and raged—until he found out they were using CADUM soap. That changed everything.
Deep down, though, GRUMPY adored Snow White. He even warned her about the Evil Queen, whose dark plans he feared. Unfortunately, Snow White didn’t listen and trusted a poor old beggar—who was actually the Queen in disguise! When the animals rushed in to say that the Queen had poisoned Snow White, GRUMPY was the first to take off after the wicked woman to make her pay.
Collect the portraits of all the Dwarfs—GRUMPY’s six brothers. There are seven in total! And don’t forget to save the pink wrappers from your CADUM soap bars. Once you have seven, send them to CADUM, Cantersteen 47, Brussels, and you’ll receive, absolutely free, a magnificent picture of Snow White and Prince Charming.
Dopey
DOPEY may seem a fool,
With his gentle, dazed look—
But behind that silly grin,
He’s got more than one trick in the book!
Meet DOPEY, the youngest of the Seven Dwarfs. He’s only 200 years old, while his companions are all over five centuries! DOPEY doesn’t speak—perhaps he’s just never tried.
Each evening after returning from the mine, he tries, without success, to march in step with the other Dwarfs. He always gets home completely worn out from this one-legged race. Being the smallest, he’s usually given all the chores. The night the Dwarfs heard a strange noise, it was—of course—DOPEY who was sent to check “what was going on upstairs.” And when he spotted Snow White under a sheet, ghostlike, he was so terrified he tumbled down into a heap of dishes with a crash! The Dwarfs, thinking they had caught the intruder, pounced on him and gave him quite a rough time. But DOPEY isn’t as dopey as his name suggests. When Snow White goes around giving the Dwarfs their kisses goodbye, he always finds a way to sneak back for a second one!
In the scene on this card, DOPEY has just swallowed a piece of soap during the scuffle to force GRUMPY to wash up before dinner. Fortunately, he didn’t get sick—because it was CADUM soap.
Collect the portraits of all the Dwarfs—DOPEY’s six brothers. There are seven in total! And don’t forget to save the pink wrappers from your CADUM soap bars. Once you’ve collected seven, send them to CADUM, Cantersteen 47, Brussels, and you’ll receive, absolutely free, a magnificent picture of Snow White and Prince Charming.

The cards of the second series
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Once upon a time, there was a young princess named Snow White, whose grace and beauty were beyond compare. Her mother, the queen, died giving birth to her. Her father, the king, remarried—but before long, he too passed away.
The new queen, cruel and jealous, was obsessed with being the fairest in the land. She possessed a magic mirror that she often consulted, and it would always reply:
“Snow White, O Queen, is a thousand times more beautiful than you!”
One day, while Snow White—who was forced by her stepmother to do the hardest chores—was washing laundry at the well, a foreign prince saw her reflection in the water and instantly fell madly in love with her.
Enraged, the queen decided to eliminate her beautiful rival. She summoned one of her huntsmen and ordered him to kill Snow White. But moved by the girl’s innocence and beauty, he spared her life. Instead of bringing back Snow White’s heart as commanded, he brought the queen the heart of a deer he had slain.
Snow White fled deep into the forest and eventually found a little cottage inhabited by seven dwarfs. These dwarfs worked all day in the mountains, mining gold and precious stones.
Followed by the gentle forest animals who had accompanied her, Snow White entered the house. She washed the dwarfs’ laundry, cleaned their dishes, tidied everything up, and, exhausted, stretched out across the little beds and soon fell into a deep sleep.
When the dwarfs returned from the mine that evening, they quickly realized someone had been inside. At first afraid, they soon welcomed the little fugitive and all lived together happily.
But the wicked queen had not given up. Once she discovered Snow White’s whereabouts, she disguised herself as an old woman and offered the girl a poisoned apple. Poor Snow White, unaware of the danger, took a bite and instantly fell into a strange and deep slumber.
When the dwarfs found her lifeless, they were overwhelmed with grief. They laid the sleeping princess on a kind of bier in a forest clearing and surrounded her with the most beautiful flowers they could find.
One summer day, Prince Charming—hunting in the nearby woods—came upon Snow White lying still and silent. Heartbroken, he approached and placed a kiss upon the lips of the one he loved.
A miracle! She awoke at once.
Overjoyed, the prince decided to take Snow White back to his father’s kingdom to marry her. After a heartfelt farewell to the dwarfs, the two sweethearts climbed onto the prince’s beautiful white horse and rode off toward their happily ever after…
The return from the mine
Once upon a time, there was a young princess, wonderfully beautiful, named Snow White. Her mother, the queen, died giving birth to her. Her father, the king, remarried, but soon after, he too passed away.
Cruel and jealous, the new queen developed a deep hatred for Snow White and ordered one of her huntsmen to kill her. But moved by the girl’s youth and grace, the man spared her life.
Snow White, fleeing through the forest, came upon a little cottage inhabited by seven dwarfs. They were away at the time.
Bravely stepping inside, followed by all the forest animals who had accompanied her, Snow White began to tidy up. She washed the dwarfs’ laundry and their abandoned dishes, and then laid down across the little beds and fell into a deep sleep.
Meanwhile, the dwarfs, who spent their days deep in the mountains mining gold and precious stones, were cheerfully heading home, their little pickaxes slung over their shoulders, singing their joyful song:
“Heigh-ho! Heigh-ho! It’s off to work we go…”
Doc led the way, holding a lantern to light their path. Behind him came Sneezy, Bashful, Grumpy, Sleepy, and Happy—and bringing up the rear was the youngest, Dopey.

Dopey’s terror
Having narrowly escaped death, Snow White found her way to the home of the Seven Dwarfs. With the help of the forest animals, she cleaned the cottage from top to bottom. Exhausted by the effort, she stretched out across the little beds and fell into a deep sleep.
That evening, as the Dwarfs returned from the mine, they noticed smoke rising from the chimney.
“Someone’s been in our house!” they cried.
“Maybe a ghost or a goblin?” suggested Doc.
“Or even a demon!” added Grumpy.
They crept forward on tiptoe, poked their heads through the half-open door, and slowly stepped inside. Then, fear took hold of them.
“Something strange is going on here! Everything’s clean—the dishes are washed!”
“It’s horrible,” grumbled Grumpy, “there’s no more dust!”
Suddenly, a faint sigh came from upstairs. It was Snow White, dreaming.
Doc handed the candleholder to Dopey and said, “Go see what’s going on up there!”
Green with fear, Dopey trembled as he climbed the stairs. But the moment he spotted Snow White, wrapped in a white sheet like a ghost, he dropped the candle and tumbled down the steps—sending panic through the group huddled at the bottom of the staircase!

The first bath
The dwarfs had fully welcomed Snow White into their home. In exchange for their hospitality, she kept the house tidy, mended their clothes, did the dishes, and baked them delicious redcurrant pies every day. She also began teaching them the benefits of cleanliness.
From then on, the dwarfs would wash their hands at the fountain each day before sitting down at the table. After a while, though, Snow White let them know that this wasn’t quite enough. She set out to demonstrate the incomparable comfort of a good, full bath. To delay the inevitable, the dwarfs pretended each day that they would bathe tomorrow. But the day came when Snow White would tolerate no more excuses.
“Today,” she said firmly, “you’re all going to bathe!”
“But it’s not Saturday!” the dwarfs protested. Snow White stood her ground.
“You know the rule,” she said. “No bath, no pie!”
The little fellows hesitated a bit longer—but then Doc discovered a few bars of Cadum soap tucked in the corner of a cupboard. That convinced them. All of them rushed off to wash at the fountain—except Grumpy, who still refused. But the other dwarfs soon hatched a plan to dunk him in the tub by force—and that moment was fast approaching!

Doc teaches a hygiene class
Snow White’s arrival in the home of the Seven Dwarfs completely transformed their lives.
She taught them the value of cleanliness. At first, the dwarfs were a bit reluctant—but over time, they began to wash regularly each day, without too much fuss.
They still thought the water was a bit cold, but the soft, fine lather of Cadum soap made the bath feel so pleasant that it soon became a real treat. But something new had taken root in the hearts of the dwarfs: They all secretly adored Snow White, and each one tried to find new ways to make her happy.
Doc, being the most learned, had not forgotten how much Snow White cared about cleanliness. So he organized a little class to demonstrate the best way to take a bath and how to make the most lather from Cadum soap—so they could always present her with clean faces, fresh beards, and perfectly washed hands.
While two of the dwarfs took turns continuing the mining work, the others attentively followed the lesson. And among the audience, you could even spot rabbits, squirrels, and other little forest creatures hanging on Doc’s every word.

Hand inspection
At first, the dwarfs were wildly frightened of Snow White, having mistaken her for a dangerous ghost. But they soon warmed up to her. Snow White, who had read their names carved on their beds, had no trouble recognizing them.
“You’re Doc,” she said, “you’re Bashful, you’re Happy, and you’re Sleepy. Here’s Sneezy, and that must be Dopey. And you… you must be Grumpy.”
Grumpy, who certainly lived up to his name, simply growled:
“First tell us how you got here!”
And when Snow White had finished telling her story, he grumbled:
“When the Queen finds out we’ve given shelter to her rival in beauty, she’ll have us all killed!”
But Snow White mischievously hinted that she knew how to make gooseberry pie.
“Gooseberry pie!” the dwarfs exclaimed. “Let’s keep her!”
“Yes, we’ll keep you… for now,” Grumpy added cautiously.
“Well then, I’ll start by making you supper,” said Snow White, “but before that, go wash your hands.”
“But they are clean!” protested the dwarfs.
“Oh really?” said Snow White, raising an eyebrow. “Well then—show me!”
After a moment of hesitation, they sheepishly held out a row of little hands, blacker than a coal miner’s.
“You’re going to wash them right now—with Cadum soap!” Snow White ordered firmly.
And this time, the seven little men ran off toward the fountain.

Snow White narrates
Ever since Snow White had found refuge in the home of the Seven Dwarfs, life had gone on joyfully and peacefully. In the evenings, they would all gather around the large fireplace, and by the flickering light of the crackling fire, each would take turns telling a wonderful story. But what the dwarfs loved most was Snow White’s own tale—one they never tired of hearing again and again. Almost every time, Snow White would give in to their pleading and begin:
“My father was the king of a marvelous land. The Queen—my mother—was kind and beautiful, but she died giving birth to me. My father remarried, and then passed away not long after. The new queen, jealous and cruel, harbored a deep hatred for me. One day, as I was washing clothes at the well, I met a foreign prince, and we instantly fell madly in love. That’s when the queen ordered a huntsman to kill me. But he took pity on me and spared my life. I fled deep into the forest, and that’s how I came upon your little cottage, my dear little friends…”
Then the dwarfs all cried out as one:
“You’ll never leave us again, will you, Snow White?”
Snow White hesitated.
“Alas,” she said, “who can predict the future? One day… perhaps… my Prince will come…”
And at those prophetic words, the eyes of the seven dwarfs filled with tears.

The party
To celebrate Snow White’s arrival under their roof, the dwarfs decided to throw a joyful party. Naturally, all the little forest animals who had accompanied Snow White were invited. And so, on the evening of the celebration, a long procession of rabbits, squirrels, deer, and countless little birds—all freshly groomed for the occasion—made their noisy way to the dwarfs’ house.
The dwarfs had gone all out, beautifully decorating their cozy little home. Of course, everyone’s talents were put to good use. Grumpy, who was a bit of a musician, sat down in front of a strange instrument—something like an organ with wooden pipes, each carved with comical faces whose mouths opened to let the notes out.
Doc played the accordion, Happy coaxed unexpected sounds from an old guitar, and Sneezy kept time with a soup spoon. Bashful got brave enough to sing, and Dopey saw his lifelong dream come true: he danced with Snow White. In short, everyone had a wonderful time, and the celebration lasted late into the night.
