Anna Gaylor

Discovered on Television

Anna Gaylor provided the voice of Snow White on several records released by Le Petit Ménestrel, alongside Monique Martial. She first appeared in an adaptation of the fairy tale narrated by Rosy Varte (catalog numbers ALB 340 and ENF 716), followed by an adaptation of Walt Disney’s film (LLP 310 F).

As evidenced by the November 1, 1959, cover of Radio Télévision Cinéma, which featured her under the headline “Révélée par la T.V.” (“Discovered on Television”), it was television that brought Anna Gaylor to the attention of the general public. As early as 1956, she appeared in the series La Famille Anodin, before going on to perform in numerous television productions, both in France and England.

At the same time, she pursued a particularly prolific stage career. In 1956, she appeared alongside Claude Brasseur and Jean Richard in Bon appétit, Monsieur ! at the Théâtre de l’Athénée in Paris. She would go on to perform in dozens of plays throughout her career.

Gaylor also made her film debut in 1956, appearing in André Hunebelle’s Mannequins de Paris, before taking on numerous roles, sometimes small but often memorable. She notably played the mother of Jean Reno’s character in Les Visiteurs (1993) and the mother of Christian Clavier’s character in Les Anges gardiens (1995). She also worked as a voice actress, contributing to French dubbings of foreign films, including Goodfellas (1990).

In addition to her acting career, Anna Gaylor was an author. She wrote Marie Dorval : Grandeur et misère d’une actrice romantique, a biography of the celebrated 19th-century French stage actress Marie Dorval.
