One Singer
Harry Stockwell was an MGM hopeful when he auditioned for the role of the Prince on November 20, 1936. He was apparently one of the last to audition, but he was not chosen until after April 1937, long after the rest of the cast had been selected. Although Walt wanted a tenor for the role, he was persuaded to hire a lyric baritone.
Harry Stockwell recalled having to record “One Song” over and over again, as well as his few lines, which he re-recorded because he was supposed to be saying them to Snow White as she ran away and he wasn’t projecting his voice enough.
He also remembered that Walt Disney had asked him to choose his favorite voice for the prince from a selection of other singers. Stockwell sincerely chose the one he thought was best, and it turned out that he had chosen his own voice.
Harry Stockwell was asked to sing outside the Carthay Circle Theater at the world premiere and he later sneaked in with Adriana Caselotti, as they had not been invited to the actual screening. He also gave concerts as “the voice of Prince Charming” for years after that as this magazine reports.
With Adriana, he sued Disney over the use of his voice on the soundtrack records on October 1938. They both lost the case.
