Snow White silhouette book (Jesco) 1955

The first silhouette

This book is the first in the S96 series of “silhouette” books—that is, books whose outer edges are die-cut to match the cover illustration—published between 1955 and 1956, apparently by Jesco (Jeux – Éducation – Sports – COmpagnie), although the company’s name does not appear on this particular number.

The titles in the series for 1955 are:

  • Snow White (S96/1)
  • Bambi (S96/2)
  • Texas Mickey (S96/3)
  • Donald Castaway (S96/4)

And the 1956 titles are:

  • 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (S96/5)
  • Davy Crockett, King of the Trappers (S96/6)
  • Lady and the Tramp (S96/7)
  • Tramp Finds Lady (S96/8)

Copies of No. 6, Lady and the Tramp, exist bearing the note “Offered by the fine Kraft cheeses,” which is surprising given the limited distribution of Kraft products in France at the time. This title also exists in a German-language edition under the simpler title Lady.

These books were reprinted at least until 1958. The “Jesco” name does not appear until the title Bambi.

Jesco would later publish other silhouette book series as well, in 1962 and 1963, with the “Baby Silhouettes” collection. The stories in that series were written by André Lefèvre and illustrated by Jean-Marie Desbeaux, but there is no indication that the 1955 books were by the same hands.
