Shortly after the French release, on August 23, 1994, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was also released on video in the U.S. on October 26, 1994, and the American Laserdisc box set has nothing to envy the comparatively simpler French version. Although VHS is the most widely available and the cheapest, this format unquestionably offers better image quality and other unprecedented possibilities. The disc is offered for sale either on its own for $29.99, or in a thick cardboard box, similar in visual appearance to VHS, which contains three discs, a book and lithographic reproductions of American posters from 1937 to 1993 for $99.99.
Laserdisc Features
The film is offered in CAV code, in its 1993 NTSC restoration at 24 frames per second. It is divided into 28 chapters on the 4 sides of 2 discs, with chapters 29 to 32 on the 4th side dedicated respectively to the table of contents, trailers, advertising (posters, promotional photos, press kits) and merchandising.
You can choose to watch the film in its original English mono, in digital stereo or with a special track containing only music and sound effects, without dialogue.
Extra Features
The third disc, housed in a separate sleeve with the same visuals as the box set, is entitled “The Making of a Masterpiece” and contains 75 chapters and 3 sound tracks on two sides, a breathtaking number of bonus features that will be the model for all future editions of the film, as well as those of other Walt Disney films and even those of other studios. Indeed, although DVD and Blu-ray editions will later offer new and better-quality extras, the majority of what they offer originates here, and some extras will remain exclusive to this edition.
Book
The book included in the boxed set is in fact a reprint, with a new blue cover and dust jacket reproducing the boxed set’s visuals, of the 1987 British book: “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs & the Making of the Classic Film” by Richard Holliss and Brian Sibley, released for the first time in North America.
