Sifflez en travaillant & La tyrolienne des nains by Roger’s with Jean Vaissade (Gramophone K-8129) 1938

HMV’s accordion take on Snow White

Once again, the accordion—then the signature instrument of the musette style—takes center stage in this 1938 recording by Jean Vaissade and his musette ensemble. The refrains of “Whistle While You Work” (matrix OLA 2562) and “The Dwarfs’ Yodel Song” (matrix OLA 2564) are sung in French by Roger’s.

The first track is fairly close to what Maurice Alexander was recording around the same time, though with more vocal presence. As for “The Dwarfs’ Yodel Song,” this version includes three of the eight verses published in sheet music at the time. Roger’s performs the first two, then jumps directly to the fourth.

Given how similar the orchestration is, it is possible that Jean Vaissade—though uncredited—was also responsible for the shortened version of “The Dwarfs’ Yodel Song” found on the Coucou children’s records.
